One of the head-centres for this species of revenue fraud was this Irishtown, and it was here that Uncle Sam determined to put his foot down. General Pleasanton was collector of the district then, and he got the United States troops at Fort Hamilton and other forts to help him, under General Vogdes. So there was a great time one mornin’, and several hundred soldiers were marched out “under arms,” just as if there was a war.

They were marched into Irishtown and the revenue officers commenced to do the seizin’ of the stills and breakin’ ‘em up. Then the trouble began. The whiskey men did all they could to resist, of course, and gave the officers all the bother they could. But the real trouble came from a quarter that hadn’t been calculated on.

The women of Irishtown loved whiskey, and when they saw the officers of the law smashin’ up the stills and all the apparatus for whiskey makin’, it nearly broke their hearts. At first the women took it out in tongue-lashin’–they hooted the revenue officers and called ‘em all the bad names in the calendar; but hard words don’t break any bones and couldn’t save any of the whiskey. So they tried somethin’ more effective. They got brooms and shovels and pokers and attacked the revenue people with that sort of weapon. Of course they didn’t do any great damage that way, but they continued to make ‘emselves confoundedly annoyin’. One woman, called Betsy Tyrone, or in the slang of Irishtown, Mother Elizabeth, was a sort of leader of the female gang, and she hit upon an idea which worked pretty well for a while. She got the women to be heat their pokers red-hot and with these red hot pokers they went for the revenue officers.

There don’t seem to be anythin’ formidable about a poker. But I tell you, many a man that ain’t afraid of a man with a pistol has a mighty deal of reverence for a woman with a red-hot poker. And for an hour or so the pokers had the best of it. But pokers get cold, and meanwhile the officers were playin’ the deuce with the whiskey.

So the women threw away their pokers, and as a last hope went for the stills and boilers ‘emselves. They put their arms around the stills, and held on to ‘em like a woman to a baby; and then they got on the carts that had been brought to carry the stuff away, and once or twice they managed to get the apparatus away from the officers.

While the fight was goin’ on a lot of the women of Irishtown got pitchers and basins, and cups, and anything they could lay their hands on, and filled them up with whiskey that was gettin’ destroyed and spilled all around. And then they took their pitchers and cups and basins home, and thus had whiskey enough for the biggest spree Irishtown had ever seen.

Finally the draymen who had been hired to cart the stuff away by the government refused to finish the job and left their trucks to take care of ‘emselves. Then the officers and the soldiers had to turn in, or rather out, and do the drivin’, while the mob pelted ‘em with curses and pavin’ stones.

It seemed for a time as if Irishtown would get ahead of the United States Government; but the troops were brought into use, made a regular bayonet charge on the mob and dispersed ‘em. But as my friend the detective said, it was the toughest dose of whiskey-gettin’ he had ever heard of.

Talkin’ of the whiskey raid reminds me of the notorious Jimmy Haggerty, who was head over ears in the whiskey ring frauds, and was in the pay of half a dozen big illicit distilleries. He had a good deal of “political influence” both in Philadelphia and New York, and was a tremendous fighter. Jimmy Haggerty used to boast that “he’d lick the devil if he was hired to,” and there wasn’t a livin’ man he was afraid of.

He had some mighty good points about him, this Jimmy Haggerty, points which, put to better use would have made him a great and a good man. He was always faithful to his employers. If he took a man’s money he would do that man’s work–and do it well, too. Then he was very active and industrious–couldn’t bear to be idle; he would rather be doin’ mischief than be doing nothin’. Then he would keep his own counsel. Even when he was drunk he wouldn’t blab. He would talk about everythin’ when he was “lush” except his own secrets and those of his employers. The detectives once put a pretty woman on his track to find out the names of his employers in the whiskey ring. He took a fancy to this woman and he went on a week’s jamboree with her. But all that week, although the woman did her best with her tongue and her ears, she didn’t get a thing out of Haggerty. Now any man who can beat wine and women together must have a deal of character, and yet that is just what this “rough” Jimmy Haggerty, who had served a term in the penitentiary for burglary, did.

For a long time Haggerty had everythin’ his own way, but he got in limbo at last on a lot of charges. He was found guilty and was to be sentenced to Cherry Hill prison in Philadelphia for five years. Passin’ sentence was deferred for a while, and durin’ that while Jimmy used all his brains and influence, and with the money he could command he chalked out a plan of escape which was perfectly splendid, as a plan.

He, or his friends for him, and his employers in the whiskey ring, who had stuck to him just as he had stuck to them, sent to Brooklyn and New York for one gang of about twenty men, and to Baltimore for another gang of about ten men. Philadelphia roughs wouldn’t do for Jimmy’s little game, as they would be known to the police and might be suspected. These thirty men were well paid, and well instructed what to do, in case of half a dozen things happenin’–the main thing bein’ to be all around the court house at the time when Jimmy was brought there to be sentenced, and then, under some pretext or another, to make a disturbance and give Jimmy a chance to escape.

Well, the mornin’ Jimmy Haggerty was to be sentenced came at last, and was a a dismal, rainy mornin’. Of course there was a large crowd around the entrance to the court house, and among the crowd were the street roughs from New York and Baltimore, and each rough brought an umbrella, which had been furnished them by Haggerty’s friends.

The prison van drove up to the court house with Haggerty in it, who took matters apparently very coolly, though even he must have felt just a little nervous. The prison van stopped, and the officers led out Jimmy Haggerty. The police tried to keep the crowd from the van, but a lot of men with umbrellas pushed each other pretty close. Haggerty stepped out of the van, looked around him with that keen sight of his, and saw that all was ready for his fine work. He stretched his arms out as if he was getting his coat to sit more easily on him. This was a signal, and just then somebody yelled out “fire.” This made a stir in the crowd, and quick as lightnin’, Jimmy Haggerty sprang to one side, and the crowd with umbrellas closed right around him. The officers darted after Haggerty, but couldn’t see exactly where he was for all the umbrellas of the crowd were poked in their faces; and although an umbrella don’t amount to much as a weapon, you can’t see it through it, at any rate.

The officers dashed away the umbrellas, but by this time Haggerty had got across the street, and had entered a hotel. He knew the hotel by heart, a plan of it having been furnished him by his friends, and he walked right up to the bath room, and from the bath room to the little staircase that led to a rear street, where a hack had been waitin’ for him for two hours.

The hack went like lightnin’ one way, to give the idea it was goin’ to the depot, and then turned right in another direction, and went to another depot. Haggerty had just time to get his ticket and his train, and he was never seen again in Philadelphia.

[Editor’s notes: Jimmy Haggerty’s escape took place in October, 1869. There were several Internal Revenue raids in the Irishtown section of Brooklyn between 1868 and 1871, with one of the largest taking place in December of 1869. Was Haggerty involved in the Brooklyn whisky trade? Probably, but there is no proof.

Harry Hill–the real one, not a ghostwriter–would have had little love for Haggerty. Haggerty had been one of the toughs who started a fight in Harry’s dance hall during which Harry was shot at, and received a nasty cut on his head that nearly caused him to lose an eye.

Men, women, and even children made up the Irishtown mobs that greeted Federal troops during the “Whisky Wars” by hurling invectives and occasional brickbats. However, there are no known accounts naming an Elizabeth “Betsy” Tyrone, “Mother Elizabeth,” or attacks made by women with hot pokers.]
