Perhaps it was this last habit that led him to goin\u2019 down hill, for bad poetry leads to almost everythin\u2019 else bad, and that is perhaps why so many poor poets get to be so very poor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Yet, even when at his lowest, John Allen was a tolerably well-educated and smart man. He used to take a good many daily and weekly papers, among \u2018em the <em>New York Observer<\/em> and the <em>Independent,<\/em> and he used to read \u2018em between drinks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; And he used to have his family around him in his den, especially his little five-year-old boy, who got to be one of the chief curiosities and attractions of the place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 This boy was called Chester\u2013but not in honor of the President, who was then not very \u201chigh Jinks\u201d as a politician\u2013and his father played him for all he was worth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"467\" height=\"532\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/jerrykuntz.org\/harryhill\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Allen_John.png?resize=467%2C532&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1861\" style=\"width:283px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/jerrykuntz.org\/harryhill\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Allen_John.png?w=467&amp;ssl=1 467w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/jerrykuntz.org\/harryhill\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Allen_John.png?resize=263%2C300&amp;ssl=1 263w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 467px) 100vw, 467px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">John Allen with Chester<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; He managed his little son Chester precisely as if he was the star of a combination. He crammed the little fellow full of all sorts of subjects that he couldn&#8217;t possibly understand, but which he could talk about on the principle of the poll parrot. As for Chester himself, he loved, like all smart children, to hear himself talk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Allen had a rough-and-ready way with him, and was a good off-hand speaker. One time Mr. Albert C. Arnold, of the Howard Mission, three clergyman, two policemen and Oliver Dyer visited his place. Allen was ready for \u2018em\u2013told the orchestra to \u201ctoot up\u201d in their honor, set his girls to dancin\u2019 and then yelled out to a big woman, standin\u2019 by, \u201cHartford, go up stairs and get my baby.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; \u201cHartford\u201d went up stairs, and then Allen turned to his visitors with a leer and a wink. \u201cNow, gents,\u201d said he, \u201cyou are all writers and ministers and philosophers, and think you know everythin\u2019, but I&#8217;m now goin\u2019 to show you that my baby knows as much as any of you. He&#8217;s hell on writin\u2019, prayin\u2019 and fightin\u2019, Chester is.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The good folks squirmed at this kind of talk but they squirmed more when \u201cthe baby\u201d was brought down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Chester was in his night gown, just woke out of sleep. A real kind father who truly loved his child wouldn&#8217;t have woke him up just then in his first baby sleep, not for all the visitors and advertisements in the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 But the poor little \u201cstar\u201d baby was used to this sort of a thing, and soon he was wide awake and pert, and answered a lot of questions in geography, arithmetic and all that, the good people lookin\u2019 on and applaudin\u2019 instead of protestin\u2019 and insistin\u2019 that the baby should be sent to bed. \u201cNow, Chester, give us a song,\u201d cried his father. The little shaver danced like a sailor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; \u201cAnd now, Chester, give us a prayer.\u201d And right on top of the song and dance the baby repeated the Lord&#8217;s Prayer, and then looked round for applause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; After some more singin\u2019 and dancin\u2019, poor, tired baby was taken up stairs again to bed, and then John Allen invited his reverend visitors to sail in and have a dance with the girls. \u201cThe girls shan\u2019t harm you, gents,\u201d he said, laughin\u2019. \u201cI&#8217;ll watch over you myself like a hen over her chickens. Ha, ha!\u201d and he burst out in a laugh so hearty that, spite of their surprise and anger, some of the dominis joined in the laugh \u2018emselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; One of the ministers finally asked him if he wouldn&#8217;t allow a regular prayer meetin\u2019 in his place, to which Allen with his characteristic free and easy cool impudence replied right off: \u201cWhat with my pious newspapers and you fellows comin\u2019 and singin\u2019 camp meetin\u2019 hymns here, I am already looked upon by my neighbors as a little out of the way; but really, gents, if on top of all this you were to start a camp meetin\u2019 here, why, I would lose what little character I have left, ha! ha!\u201d and here he burst into another fit of laughin\u2019, in which the dominies did not join.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 But the good people were bound to have their prayer meetin\u2019s at Allen&#8217;s place. So one night in the latter part of May, about midnight, six clergyman again accompanied by Mr. Arnold and a policeman, as a guard, got up a raid and marched to Allen&#8217;s dance house.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"566\" height=\"432\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/jerrykuntz.org\/harryhill\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/AllensPrayerMeeting.png?resize=566%2C432&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1864\" style=\"width:426px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/jerrykuntz.org\/harryhill\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/AllensPrayerMeeting.png?w=566&amp;ssl=1 566w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/jerrykuntz.org\/harryhill\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/AllensPrayerMeeting.png?resize=300%2C229&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 566px) 100vw, 566px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The prayer meeting in John Allen&#8217;s dance hall<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; They found the place closed, but a light peeped through the shutters, so they knocked. They heard Allen&#8217;s voice tellin\u2019 somebody to open the door, and then rushin\u2019 in they found Allen with his head all soapsuds, gettin\u2019 a shampooin\u2019, so as to send him to bed sober.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; \u201cThis is the best way to get rid of a drunk, gents,\u201d he said, addressin\u2019 the reverend gents. \u201cI&#8217;ve tried all sorts of ways, but this is the shortest and cheapest. I recommend it to any of you gentlemen if you are ever inclined that way. Whenever you find yourself drunk about bed time you just take a good shampoo and you&#8217;ll find the investment pay a big dividend in the mornin\u2019.\u201d And here John Allen paused in his peculiar temperance lecture, for by this time he had done shampooin\u2019, had braced up, and invited all hands \u201cto take a drink.\u201d His invitation not bein\u2019 accepted, he proposed a social smoke. But the \u201csocial smoke\u201d was declined, like the \u201csocial glass.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; \u201cThen what can I do for you, gentlemen?\u201d asked Allen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; \u201cWe&#8217;ve come to pray,\u201d said Arnold, of the Howard Mission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; \u201cYou shan\u2019t pray here,\u201d growled Allen; \u201cI do all the prayin\u2019 here myself.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; He walked off cursin\u2019 to the bar, but Arnold and the rest prayed, and the next day it was all in the papers, and John Allen calculated that in twenty-four hours he got over a thousand dollars free advertisin\u2019, and I guess he did.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The good people were in dead earnest, though, and even got Allen to close his place for a while, and prevailed upon him to attend church at the Howard Mission and to publicly announce that he should never open his place again on the old basis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; So far so good\u2013very good\u2013and if it had stopped right here the cause of good order would have gained. But, unfortunately, while the ministers and missionaries and pious ladies were sincere, Allen, Tommy Hadden, Slocum and Kid Burns were not. They only went into the affair as a matter of biz and notoriety, and after the excitement and the advertisement was over they went back to the old rut worse than ever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; As for Allen, he and his wife and several of his girls were arraigned before Justice Dowling ror robbin\u2019 a sailor out of fifteen dollars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; And certainly John Allen couldn&#8217;t have been the wickedest man in New York before the \u201crevival\u201d at his place for the simple reason that he was worse after it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Sensational \u201crepentances\u201d seldom last any longer than the \u201csensation.\u201d There are very, very, very few \u201cAwful\u201d Gardners or Jerry McAuleys.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">[Editor&#8217;s notes: The above column likely drew on more than one source: \u201cThe Wickedest Man As He Is,\u201d <em>Harper\u2019s Weekly<\/em>, Aug. 8, 1868;  Dyer, Oliver. \u201cThe Wickedest Man in New York,\u201d <em>Packard\u2019s Monthly<\/em>, July, 1868;  McCabe, James D. <em>The Secrets of the Great City<\/em>, Jones Brothers and Co., 1868.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I examined John Allen&#8217;s background in my project to annotate Herbert Asbury&#8217;s <em>The Gangs of New York<\/em>. <a href=\"https:\/\/gangsannotated.blog\/2020\/09\/06\/the-von-allens-vs-the-allens\/\">His original surname was Van Allen<\/a>.
