Things always went wrong with him; even his Flower Song never brought him in anythin\u2019 but a little useless fame. The New York girl he loved didn&#8217;t love him, and altogether he got so tired of life that one day he committed suicide, though not one of one thousand who admire his beautiful composition know or care what became of the composer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"165\" height=\"257\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/jerrykuntz.org\/harryhill\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Lange_Gustav.jpg?resize=165%2C257&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1360\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Gustav Lange<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 In Lange&#8217;s case bad luck proved too much for him, but in another case of a man very popular here, who used to be a good deal around old New York, his good luck overpowered him. I allude to Steve Foster, the composer of the \u201cOld Folks at Home\u201d and the real founder of a true American school of music. Foster wrote this song\u2013Old Folks at Home\u2013in three hours, and it has been popular for thirty years. Over half a million of copies were sold of it within five years of its publication, and Foster received nearly $20,000 for his copyright on this one song alone\u2013over $6,000 for each of the three hours\u2019 work. Better pay than Patti, though it took longer to get it, and didn&#8217;t do as much good when got, either, for Patti saves her money, and poor Steve Foster spent his lavishly\u2013foolishly, in generosity and dissipation combined, and finally died, I believe, in some hospital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"393\" height=\"497\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/jerrykuntz.org\/harryhill\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Foster_Stephen.png?resize=393%2C497&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1361\" style=\"width:201px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/jerrykuntz.org\/harryhill\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Foster_Stephen.png?w=393&amp;ssl=1 393w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/jerrykuntz.org\/harryhill\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Foster_Stephen.png?resize=237%2C300&amp;ssl=1 237w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 393px) 100vw, 393px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Christy, the negro minstrel, used to have the credit of writin\u2019 this song, and in fact was entitled to it, legally, for one edition anyway, because he had paid for it. He paid Foster once four hundred dollars in bank bills, on the understandin\u2019 in writing with him and his publishers that his (Christy&#8217;s) name was to be printed on one entire edition of \u201cOld Folks at Home,\u201d as author and composer. Nor was this investment all vanity on Christy&#8217;s part, either; he got his money back ten times over by the notoriety it gave him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"330\" height=\"366\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/jerrykuntz.org\/harryhill\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/E.P._Christy.jpg?resize=330%2C366&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1362\" style=\"width:188px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/jerrykuntz.org\/harryhill\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/E.P._Christy.jpg?w=330&amp;ssl=1 330w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/jerrykuntz.org\/harryhill\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/E.P._Christy.jpg?resize=270%2C300&amp;ssl=1 270w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 330px) 100vw, 330px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">E. P. Christy<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; It ain&#8217;t often that any popular work has two people who can claim legally to be its authors at the same time, although this claim, the authorship of Works which they only claim by money, not by brains, is getting to be common. Pauline Markham had an \u201cautobiography\u201d published years ago, which she never wrote a line of, and never saw till in print. Helmbold&#8217;s \u201cAm I a Lunatic\u201d contained in all its 150 pages or so, not one line written by Helmbold, and from that time to the present this sort of thing has been getting quite popular.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Barney Williams, when in the burnt cork line, doin\u2019 the negro minstrel business, was the first to make the song of \u201cVillikins and his Dinah,\u201d a favorite with the public. Barney couldn&#8217;t sing for a cent, but he was funny, and he made the song a tremendous success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"330\" height=\"433\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/jerrykuntz.org\/harryhill\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Barney_Williams_001.jpg?resize=330%2C433&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1363\" style=\"width:178px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/jerrykuntz.org\/harryhill\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Barney_Williams_001.jpg?w=330&amp;ssl=1 330w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/jerrykuntz.org\/harryhill\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Barney_Williams_001.jpg?resize=229%2C300&amp;ssl=1 229w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 330px) 100vw, 330px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Barney Williams<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Burton afterwards took hold of the song and, introduced it in \u201cThe Wanderin\u2019 Minstrel,\u201d a piece in which Billy Mitchell had made the hit of his life, equaled only by Burton afterwards.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Burton&#8217;s singin\u2019 of \u201cVillikins\u201d was always rewarded with a triple encore, till Burton got tired of singin\u2019 and gettin\u2019 called out. So he wound up \u201cVillikins\u201d in short metre. One night when there was a tremendous house, and everybody was gettin\u2019 ready for the song, Burton sang the first verse, and then came to a dead stop. He put his hand to his head, look confused, and then rushed to the prompter\u2019s side, and had an earnest talk with him apparently. Then when the talk was over, he stepped before the footlights once more and said: \u201cLadies and gentlemen, I regret to say there is a hole in that ballad. I have sung that song so often that I have forgotten it. A copy was, of course, supposed to be unnecessary, and the prompter has assured me there is not a copy in the house. So you must excuse \u201cVillikins\u201d for this evenin\u2019.\u201d The audience thought first, that Burton was foolin\u2019, which, of course, he was, but he looked so perplexed and grieved that the audience finally took it for granted that he really had forgotten that song.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Jim Crow Rice made up in his negro business a song called \u201cZip Coon,\u201d which was tremendously popular, almost as much so as the Irish melody, \u201cKathleen Mavourneen.\u201d A good many years ago Mme. Titien&#8217;s sang in New York, and one night, among other pieces, she sang, and very finely, \u201cKathleen Mavourneen.\u201d After the concert a wild-eyed chap, in a very seedy set of clothes, half drunk and all dirty, a regular tramp, rushed up to the famous singer, as she was goin\u2019 to her dressin\u2019-room, and almost wrung her hands off as he thanked her for \u201csingin\u2019 my song.\u201d \u201cSingin\u2019 your song?\u201d said the prima donna. \u201cHow do you mean \u2018your\u2019 song?\u201d \u201cI am the author of Kathleen Mavourneen, madam,\u201d said the tramp, and he was. He was Crouch himself, who had only got $25 for his song, though his publishers got for it over $30,000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Two of the most popular of the \u201cold songs\u201d were written in New York, \u201cThe Old Oaken Bucket,\u201d by Woodworth, and \u201cWoodman, Spare That Tree,\u201d by Gen. George P. Morris. One Summer was tremendously hot, and Woodworth, who was then livin\u2019 on Greenwich street near the Battery, I believe, suffered from the heat excessively and nearly got the dropsy drinkin\u2019 water. One day he took a tremendously long pull at the water pitcher and that set him thinkin\u2019 of the long cool drinks he used to have at his grandfather&#8217;s house in the country out of the old oaken bucket. He set to work and wrote the song, and before night had made himself famous\u2013for this century at any rate\u2013just as Howard Payne made himself immortal In a night by his happy thought of \u201cHome, Sweet Home.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"253\" height=\"415\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/jerrykuntz.org\/harryhill\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/oldoakenbucket.jpg?resize=253%2C415&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1364\" style=\"width:223px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/jerrykuntz.org\/harryhill\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/oldoakenbucket.jpg?w=253&amp;ssl=1 253w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/jerrykuntz.org\/harryhill\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/oldoakenbucket.jpg?resize=183%2C300&amp;ssl=1 183w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 253px) 100vw, 253px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cA Life on the Ocean Wave\u201d written by Epes Sargent, and now familiar wherever the English language is sung, was written here in New York and shown first to a New York music critic. The critic had some songs of his own on hand and told Sargent that his song would be a failure. It really was a failure, as far as Sargent was concerned, for although the song took, Sargent never got anythin\u2019 for it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"330\" height=\"429\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/jerrykuntz.org\/harryhill\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Epes_Sargent_frontispiece.png?resize=330%2C429&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1365\" style=\"width:180px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/jerrykuntz.org\/harryhill\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Epes_Sargent_frontispiece.png?w=330&amp;ssl=1 330w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/jerrykuntz.org\/harryhill\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Epes_Sargent_frontispiece.png?resize=231%2C300&amp;ssl=1 231w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 330px) 100vw, 330px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Epes Sargent<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; \u201cBen Bolt,\u201d one of the most popular of the old songs, was written by Thomas Dunn English when a very young man, and was published in the <em>Mirror<\/em>, edited by Morris &amp; Willis. It became quite popular as a poem, but afterwards when set to music by Nelson Kneass, and introduced by him in a \u201cwar piece\u201d called \u201cThe Battle of Buena Vista,\u201d made its big hit, and after findin\u2019 its way all over the United States got hold of London, where it became as popular as in New York, and was made the basis of a play. Thousands of dollars were made off the song, by everybody concerned except English, its author.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 There is a good deal of difference between bein\u2019 an author and composer and bein\u2019 a publisher, and the difference is generally in favor of the publisher, as the poor lady who wrote \u201cRock Me to Sleep,\u201d a Mrs. Allen, can testify. Mrs. Allen got $5 for her song and was glad to get it, while the publisher made $3,000 by its sale in two years. Then Mrs. Allen sent him another song, bein\u2019 hard-up, and thinkin\u2019 she had some claim for kindness upon the man who had made 60,000 percent off of her work, but the liberal (!) publisher didn&#8217;t think the second song worth even $5, and perhaps it wasn&#8217;t\u2013to him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">[Editor&#8217;s notes: Two or three generations of white performers in 19th century America specialized in comic song, dance, and joke routines performed in blackface, i.e. &#8220;negro minstrels.&#8221; Though often immensely talented, these performers perpetuated a horribly racist genre; and at the same time suppressed authentic African-American song and dance and deprived black performers of opportunities to hone their craft.]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; I heard a street band the other day wrestlin\u2019<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"nf_dc_page":"","_monsterinsights_skip_tracking":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_active":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_note":"","_monsterinsights_sitenote_category":0,"ngg_post_thumbnail":0,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[70,90],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-1358","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-minstrels","category-music"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.7 -
