{"id":1187,"date":"2023-11-16T18:35:42","date_gmt":"2023-11-16T23:35:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jerrykuntz.org\/harryhill\/?p=1187"},"modified":"2023-11-16T20:06:58","modified_gmt":"2023-11-17T01:06:58","slug":"maggie-mitchells-source-of-fame-and-fortune-published-jul7-27-1884","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jerrykuntz.org\/harryhill\/maggie-mitchells-source-of-fame-and-fortune-published-jul7-27-1884\/","title":{"rendered":"Maggie Mitchell&#8217;s Source of Fame and Fortune [published Jul7 27, 1884]"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"250\" height=\"393\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/jerrykuntz.org\/harryhill\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/mitchell_maggie.jpg?resize=250%2C393&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1189\" style=\"width:100px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/jerrykuntz.org\/harryhill\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/mitchell_maggie.jpg?w=250&amp;ssl=1 250w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/jerrykuntz.org\/harryhill\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/mitchell_maggie.jpg?resize=191%2C300&amp;ssl=1 191w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Maggie Mitchell<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; I went down to Long Branch the other day, and drivin\u2019 around the outskirts of this famous waterin\u2019 place I saw several fine cottages and valuable tracts of land belongin\u2019 to the popular actress Maggie Mitchell, whose play of \u201cFanchon\u201d has been more often played and drawn more money than any other, if we except \u201cLady of Lyons,\u201d \u201cCamille,\u201d and \u201cEast Lynne.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; It is safe to say that Maggie Mitchell&#8217;s entire fortune has been made out of \u201cFanchon.\u201d And yet, while the actress in the play has earned from it nearly half a million of dollars in percentages, salaries and Investments, the author of the play has never received a dollar and the adapter of the play, who is still livin\u2019, has received but a few, a very few hundred dollars, about one-tenth of one percent of the money his play has brought to the actress. While the man to whose advice and friendly encouragement the actress, according to her own confession, owes her original acceptance and appearance in the play, has never, up-to-date, received anythin\u2019 but the mere statement of the fact that the lady owes her all to him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; It is a somewhat singular coincidence that at Long Branch, at the present time, there are residin\u2019 three conspicuous livin\u2019 illustrations of the startling dramatic differences, in a pecuniary point of view, between the authors and actors of plays.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"382\" height=\"361\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/jerrykuntz.org\/harryhill\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/mitchell_maggie_cottage.jpg?resize=382%2C361&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1190\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/jerrykuntz.org\/harryhill\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/mitchell_maggie_cottage.jpg?w=382&amp;ssl=1 382w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/jerrykuntz.org\/harryhill\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/mitchell_maggie_cottage.jpg?resize=300%2C284&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 382px) 100vw, 382px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Mitchell&#8217;s Cottage in Long Branch<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; \u201cCliff\u201d Tayleure has a modest cottage there. Cliff wrote, or rather dramatized, \u201cEast Lynne,\u201d a play out of which over three hundred thousand dollars has been made for actors, while considerably less than one thousand dollars\u2013less than five hundred dollars in fact, all told, directly and indirectly\u2013has been realized by the author or adapter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Near Tayleure lives in good style the rich Frank Chanfrau, who owes his start to poor Ben Baker, who wrote for him \u201cMose,\u201d which laid the foundation of his fame and fortune. Directly and indirectly off of \u201cMose,\u201d Chanfrau has made a hundred thousand, while Ben Baker made about a hundred, more or less.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"546\" height=\"716\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/jerrykuntz.org\/harryhill\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Francis_S._Chanfrau_engraving.png?resize=546%2C716&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1191\" style=\"width:174px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/jerrykuntz.org\/harryhill\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Francis_S._Chanfrau_engraving.png?w=546&amp;ssl=1 546w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/jerrykuntz.org\/harryhill\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Francis_S._Chanfrau_engraving.png?resize=229%2C300&amp;ssl=1 229w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 546px) 100vw, 546px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Frank Chanfrau<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; But perhaps Maggie Mitchell&#8217;s \u201cFanchon\u201d furnishes the most conspicuous example of all, in the way of illustratin\u2019 the difference in the rewards of writin\u2019 and actin\u2019 the same thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Some twenty-four years ago Maggie Mitchell was young and poor, \u201chard up,\u201d financially, knowing not what to do pecuniarily or professionally. She had been playin\u2019 in a rather lively piece called \u201cAnthony and Cleopatra,\u201d had been tryin\u2019 all sorts of plays, not doin\u2019 well in any, and was, dramatically speakin\u2019, on her \u201clast legs.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; She was almost in want. Above all she wanted a play\u2013a good play, adapted to her peculiar, though limited talents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Among her newspaper acquaintances at that time was a man named John W. Overall, the then literary literary and dramatic editor of the <em>New Orleans True Delta,<\/em> who was then himself quite a young man, and fond of the theatre and theatrical people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Maggie Mitchell and her mother were very intimate with Overall and had great confidence in his judgment\u2013a confidence which was justified, as the result proved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; One day Miss Mitchell and her mother had a long talk with Overall and told him how they were situated and in what sort of \u201ca fix\u201d they were. Overall got interested and said he would see what could be done, and he did.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"238\" height=\"312\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/jerrykuntz.org\/harryhill\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/overall_john_w.jpg?resize=238%2C312&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1192\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/jerrykuntz.org\/harryhill\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/overall_john_w.jpg?w=238&amp;ssl=1 238w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/jerrykuntz.org\/harryhill\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/overall_john_w.jpg?resize=229%2C300&amp;ssl=1 229w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 238px) 100vw, 238px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">John W. Overall<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Among his friends just then was a gentleman, a German by birth, named Waldauer, connected with a theatrical orchestra, leader of the St. Charles Theatre Orchestra, I believe, under Ben De Bar&#8217;s management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; This Waldauer, besides bein\u2019 an excellent musician, was a man of some literary ability, and among other things, had translated and adapted a play from the German, the MSS. of which he had shown to his friend Overall, who one day, thinkin\u2019 of this piece, told Miss Mitchell that he thought the principal role would be just the part for her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Maggie Mitchell read Waldauer\u2019s adaptation, on Overall\u2019s representation, and rather liked the piece. Still she wasn&#8217;t quite certain whether it was in her line or not. She had been playin\u2019 rollickin\u2019 farces and decidedly Frenchy and unsentimental pieces, and as \u201cFanchon\u201d was almost all sentiment, she distrusted her own abilities in this line. In fact, spite for her rather likin\u2019 the piece, she came near, just as Sothern did in \u201cThe American Cousin,\u201d throwin\u2019 away the great chance of her life, had not her friend Overall earnestly persuaded her into acceptin\u2019 the piece.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Finally the piece was produced at the St. Charles Theatre, New Orleans, the night following Washington&#8217;s birthday celebration, in the year \u201861, when the Civil War broke out, and an elaborate and favorable criticism of the piece written by Mr. Overall at once attracted attention to it, and the world knows the rest. The piece was a success, and has remained one for a quarter of a century. In fact, it has been the only success which Miss Mitchell has achieved. She has played other pieces, but they have made no \u201chit.\u201d Several have proved dead failures. She still remains only Fanchon, and the only Fanchon in the public\u2019s pecuniary and professional estimation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"313\" height=\"417\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/jerrykuntz.org\/harryhill\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/mitchell_maggie_fanchon.jpg?resize=313%2C417&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1103\" style=\"width:195px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/jerrykuntz.org\/harryhill\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/mitchell_maggie_fanchon.jpg?w=313&amp;ssl=1 313w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/jerrykuntz.org\/harryhill\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/mitchell_maggie_fanchon.jpg?resize=225%2C300&amp;ssl=1 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 313px) 100vw, 313px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Maggie Mitchell in Fanchon<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; For this play Waldauer received a few hundred dollars, less than three hundred, I believe. Which has been all he has ever received for it, less than the actress has often made in a single night by playin\u2019 it. While the friend to whose judgment and advice she owes her acceptin\u2019 the piece, received nothin\u2019 at all, save a public acknowledgment some time ago in a newspaper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Miss Mitchell has claimed that she has greatly improved, almost rewritten the piece since she received it, added the music and introduced the famous shadow dance in it herself\u2013a dance which, by the way, made the chief hit in the opera of \u201cDinorah.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; But Waldauer and Overall have always claimed that the lady is mistaken in these points, and Waldauer claims to this day that he wrote the original music for this piece and introduced the shadow dance himself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"250\" height=\"364\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/jerrykuntz.org\/harryhill\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/waldauer_august.jpg?resize=250%2C364&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1193\" style=\"width:170px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/jerrykuntz.org\/harryhill\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/waldauer_august.jpg?w=250&amp;ssl=1 250w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/jerrykuntz.org\/harryhill\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/waldauer_august.jpg?resize=206%2C300&amp;ssl=1 206w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">August Waldauer<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; At any rate, the history of \u201cFanchon,\u201d as I have given it, is an interestin\u2019, and to authors and adapters, a painfully instructive reminiscence. While the fact that a livin\u2019 actress has made off of a popular play a thousand dollars to the livin\u2019 author or adapter\u2019s one, tells its own story and points its own moral\u2013for authors and adapters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">[Editor&#8217;s notes: Following the Civil War, John W.
